Cash 'n Stash 'n Don't Crash

On the way to Gundy last week I said to myself, "make sure you stop at the antique stores along the way".  I was on my own and figured it was a perfect time to be vintage cup and saucer hunting. No distractions. No agitated or bored Hubby. Just me taking my own sweet time. So why did I drive straight through all the towns without stopping? Not once except for a coffee break in Warwick. All I can think of is I was too eager to see my precious boy and nothing was going to slow me down.

The drive back home however was a different story. I left Mitch at 10am. I knew I had to drop in and say hello to the real estate man who sold us our property. And also to give him three jars of preserves. Apparently I've made quite an impression on him; but the biggest impression of all has been for my Hubby. He is very excited at having attracted such a 'go-getter' (his words) to his progressive thriving country town. He is unlike any real estate person we've met. He is a truly, genuine man who wants the best for his town and for the people in it. No tricks. All upfront. All honest. Just amazing. I had a good feeling about him the first time we met. Thankfully the instincts were bang on right.

As I left his office and began to head out of town, the hunger pangs kicked in. Ooops - no breakfast is not a good idea when there's a four and a half hour drive ahead. I did a U-turn and dropped into Gunsynd Bakery where the sausage rolls are mighty good. Heading out again, I noticed an antique shop. What the hell - let's take a look.

Half an hour in and I purchased a little more than my wallet was accomodating. They only took cash or cheque. Fortunately the bank was on the corner. As I left the lady packing all my vintage goodies, I headed back into town; raided the ATM and drove back just in time to buy some more stuff! She did a great job packing my precious wares. Just in case I hit the breaks hard!

I glanced at my watch. Spot on midday and I haven't even left Gundy!! But I do leave happily. Yay some more to add to the collection. Eighty kms in and I reach the town of Inglewood. The car is controlling me I swear and forces me to park!

Another cafe/vintage store and I walk out with not much change from one hundred bucks. But I'm smiling and isn't that all that matters.

I get to Warwick; another coffee (cake too). Warwick is a big place. It's almost school knock off time so the roads will carry heaps more traffic. I decide to antique shop here another time.

By the time I get to Canungra, I'm refreshed to hit the stores again. The antique stores open from Thursday to Sunday. That doesn't help me on this Wednesday. It's about half an hour to home from Canungra and I decide I'll come back soon. Well I went back sooner than I thought. Yesterday actually. Three stores and we are into three figures in no time. Smiling again and the vintage stash is growing. Can't wait for lots of little high teas in the valley next year.

And so much more - what fun!

  1. Mariana your high tea is going to look absolutely beautiful. All these gorgeous cups, (I think I like the last one the most out of this post.) Bunting, beautiful tea cups...now I'm curious to know what food you'll be serving.

    1. Thanks Brydie - 'beautiful' - that's the plan. I'm getting quite a collection actually and I'm really happy with some of my 'finds' and 'gains'. I tested the bunting out there and oh my; it looks really gorgeous. Hah! The food? With inspiring blogs like yours, I have a wealth of delicious and classy recipes from which to choose. Next year dear, so I have a while to think about it.

  2. Oh how I love these vintage style teacups too!!! An antique shops! For a number of years I had 4 vintage teacups (with matching saucers and side plates) tucked away in a shoe box in the back of a cupboard. When I had my kitchen renovated last year I found this shoebox and now the teacups are the first thing I see when I open my mug cupboard. I love to make a cup of Earle Grey Tea on one of these and listen to classical music, ahh heaven ; )

    1. Thanks for sharing your lovely story Danielle. Yes my dear you're not the only one who loves the vintage cup and saucer style. The antique shops are making a pretty dollar on such items these days. I'm told that future brides love to hold pre-wedding parties with the vintage look being very fashionable. What that means is no sooner do vintage items come in than they fly back out the door. Not so easy to find and the price tag is not easy on the wallet either!

  3. Hi Mariana
I don't get it, about 50% of the time my comments on your blog get lost:( I commented on this post ages ago. Oh well. My favourite is the cup in the second photo. What is the name of the cup? I have a butter plate with a very similar design. You certainly seem to be having fun.

  4. Hmm that's a worry Glenda. Brydie mentioned the exact same thing on my 'Bunting' post. I've just been to 'settings' and am allowing unmoderated comments. Hope that makes a difference.

Now as for the cup - there is no name. From what I can make out there is a number; R 11844/811 7 - a rather large written number. It says Fine bone china, 'Shelley' England. That's it I'm afraid. It's strange actually. I bought the cup with a mixed saucer and cake plate for a mere $18. And then I saw a separate saucer with the same design as the cup on sale for $30. The saucer is still in the shop I suspect.
